Cell Phone Text Phishing

June 20, 2011

During the past several days, Summit Bank has been notified by customers -- and non-customers -- that they received text messages on their cell phones. These messages claimed their debit card had been deactivated and asks them to call a local (541) phone number to reactivate their card.
Consumers should know that none of these messages originated from Summit Bank. In addition, Summit’s data has not been compromised. Summit is working with the police and the FBI to identify the source of this scam. The scammers are broadcasting messages to cell phone numbers, “phishing” for people to respond. Authorities say this a ploy to get personal account information from people who think they are communicating with their bank.
It is not the practice of Summit Bank or any other financial institution to communicate with customers using text messages. Nor will banks ever send an email asking for account information. If consumers believe they received these communications, they should contact their bank immediately.
Summit Bank is listed on the NASDAQ Exchange as SBKO. With its headquarters in Eugene, the bank specializes in providing high-level service to professionals, medium-sized businesses and their owners.
